What is a GED?
The General Equivalency Diploma is given out to those who pass the GED test. Businesses, schools, universities and career training programs view and accept it just like a high school diploma. The test itself covers five areas: math, reading, writing, social studies and science. You will also be required to write an essay. This will showcase your grammar and vocabulary skills. The test is given at a state-approved testing facility or through an approved GED test given online. It usually takes most of the day to complete. Each section is timed, and other than the writing portion, the questions are all multiple choice. You can score between 200 and 800. A score of 450 will usually earn you your diploma, although every state has a different passing score.
To be eligible to take the GED test, you need to be of a certain age. This varies by state, but it is usually over the age of 18. You also cannot be enrolled in high school or a secondary school. And you must be a legal resident.
Preparing for the GED test
While the GED test does not require that you have the same knowledge base as a high school graduate, it does cover the basics of a high school education. It will help you gauge how much time you have for each question. For instance, in the math section, you have approximately a minute and a half to answer each question.
Make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before the test and have a healthy breakfast. The test will take all day and will be exhausting. But once it’s over, you’ll be that much closer to pursuing your dreams.
Earning a high school diploma online
While a GED is seen as a high school diploma to most employers and higher education institutions, some of them do not see it as equivalent. You many end up wanting to attend a school or apply for a job that does not accept a GED. Or the school or job may have more restrictions or requirements for GED holders. At that point, it might be worth it to earn your high school diploma through an online program.
The added benefit of earning your high school diploma online is gaining the extra knowledge that a high school student would have. It goes beyond just covering the basics by studying for the GED test.
